  #PoetryMonth continues! Today I’m celebrating the lovely Dr. @eve.ewing ! As well as a fellow sociologist (wohoo sociology!) Ewing is also a poet and author of several @marvel comics (cool right??!). I got to meet her at a forum in my last hear of college and have loved her ever since. In my stories I’m linking her poetry collection Electric Arches, which was selected as one of the Best Books of 2017 by NPR.

What a joy to do this cover while wearing a piece designed by groundbreaking Black designer @virgilabloh that honors my heritage.   So grateful for the opportunity to honor three change-makers at the Super Bowl. Crafting a 90 second poem that celebrates three distinct heroes, each with their own inspiring life story, certainly was difficult, but more than worth the challenge. I so enjoyed researching and learning more about these three captains over the past two months.   Wow, we’re about to see poetry at the Super Bowl for the first time people. It’s a turning page for poetry, for art, and for our country, because it means we’re thinking more imaginatively about the power of human stories, more expansively about the ways to connect us even when we feel more siloed than ever. What’s more, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say they are excited to watch the Super Bowl because there will be poetry at it. What a thrilling moment we live in, when we are so eager to celebrate art, hope and each other. Today I have the distinct privilege of honoring three heroes who exemplify the absolute best of humanity. Here’s to them. Here’s to poetry. Here’s to a Super Bowl like no other.   Can’t believe it’s been two years since this came out! Thank you to @kiraktv and @cbsthismorning for this amazing opportunity as well as the several we’ve worked on together since. At first I was terrified to pen a piece about a holiday that was fraught with such a history of colonialism and genocide. But I felt the poem was worth writing if it could call attention to what various indigenous American value systems have to teach us all about gratitude--namely that giving thanks isn’t an annual day, but actions woven into our daily life that contribute to something larger than ourselves. While for some today is a celebration, for others it is a rightful day of collective mourning. This is a lesson to be learned, and a question to ask ourselves: What do we have that we have taken for granted? And how can I give that away in honor of those whose land I stand on, in service of my people and my planet? In this spirit, I’m starting off my day donating to some of these organizations I love: @natifs_org , which addresses the economic and health crises affecting Native communities by re-establishing Native foodways. Another thanks we can give is to the farm workers who continue to provide us with food. Donations can be made to @ufwf , which promotes the dignity of our farmworkers.
